Frequently Asked Questions
Answers about wedding appointments at Vienna's registry offices, and how wienheiraten.com helps you find one.
Wedding appointments in Vienna
How do I get a wedding appointment in Vienna?
You reserve wedding appointments online through the City of Vienna's appointment system. Pick one of the five registry offices that offer online reservations and find an available date. The appointment is only confirmed once you register in person with the required documents.
When are new wedding slots released?
The booking system automatically opens slots roughly six months in advance. Because demand is high, many couples search shortly after midnight for the newly released day.
Why do wedding slots in Vienna fill up so fast?
The registry offices are heavily booked, and popular dates, especially in summer, can be gone within minutes. That said, individual slots keep opening up again through cancellations.
Which registry offices can I reserve online?
Currently five: Alsergrund, Simmering, Hietzing, Ottakring and Donaustadt. These are exactly the five offices wienheiraten.com monitors.
Can I reserve any ceremony online?
Online reservation only covers standard registry-office ceremonies during regular hours. A 'Traumhochzeit' in the evening, on a Saturday, or at an external venue is reserved separately, directly with the City of Vienna. If both partners live outside Austria (tourist wedding), online reservation isn't possible either.
How far in advance can I reserve an appointment?
Between 29 days and six months ahead. The official appointment system shows you the earliest bookable date directly.
How much does a civil wedding in Vienna cost?
A civil wedding does involve fees: a federal charge (Bundesabgabe) applies for the registration, plus municipal fees. You'll find the current amounts on the City of Vienna's official page.
What happens after I reserve a slot?
You get a confirmation by email. Note: the reservation is held for only 14 days. Within that window both partners must email all required documents (birth certificate, proof of citizenship and photo ID) to the registry office, otherwise the slot is released. If your registration is delayed, you can extend the reservation by phone.
How does registering the marriage work?
Once your documents are checked, the registry office invites you to an in-person registration appointment. There you settle details like your future surnames and how the ceremony runs. Only with this registration is the date final. The reservation confirmation alone is not proof. Replies can take several weeks. Non-German documents such as your birth certificate must be provided in international format or with a certified German translation. Allow extra time for this.
About wienheiraten.com
How does wienheiraten.com help me find an appointment?
Instead of clicking through every office-and-month combination in the official system, wienheiraten.com shows all available slots across the five registry offices in a single view.
Can I be notified as soon as a slot opens up?
Yes. Subscribe with your email and preferred date range. We check every few minutes and email you the moment a matching slot appears.
Does wienheiraten.com book the appointment automatically for me?
No. wienheiraten.com only shows you what's available. You make the booking yourself through the City of Vienna's official appointment system.
Is wienheiraten.com official and free?
It's free to use. But wienheiraten.com is not an official City of Vienna service. It's an independent, non-commercial project that only reads publicly available appointment data.
How can I see when slots opened up in the past?
The timeline shows when slots appeared, how long they stayed available, and when they were booked, which is useful for understanding the release patterns.
